Lifelong Rensselaer County resident James “Jimmy” Mantello, of Troy, died suddenly at Albany Medical Center on Saturday, May 28, according to his obituary.
Mantello retired from the Troy Police Department in 1997 after serving 31 years, according to the Troy Police Benevolent and Protective Association (PBA), of which he was a member.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Detective Mantello during this hard time,” the PBA said in a Facebook post. “Jimmy will live on forever in spirit with his family here at the TPD and he will never be forgotten.”
Mantello began his law enforcement career in 1966 as a police officer and later worked as a detective, his obituary said. He also served in the US Army reserves.
When he wasn’t busy investigating crimes in Troy, Mantello enjoyed watching horseracing, fishing, and spending summers in Ocean City, Maryland, his obituary said. He was also a Yankees fan.
"Fly high, Uncle Jimmy," Mantello's niece, Mary Estrada, wrote on his online memorial. "You were a great role model for us kids. You will be missed."
Mantello is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna Mae Bouchard Mantello, children Roberto, Carmella, Michael, Gary, and Sylvio, nine grandchildren, his brother, Anthony, and several nieces and nephews.
A viewing is set for Friday, June 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home in Lansingburgh.
Funeral mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church in Troy followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
According to his obituary, memorial donations are encouraged in Mantello’s name to the Lansingburgh Boys and Girls Club.
